Ueda Tatsuya - 10 Question Personality Analysis - duet May 2008
Surprise! Here is Ueda's section in continuation of the '10 Question Personality Analysis' series. This one didn't give me as much translating grief compared to Kamenashi and Akanishi's parts. Ueda answered each question quite straight-forwardly which made it easier for me to translate.
Kind of unrelated to this article in particular, but since hearing their new song 'DON'T U EVER STOP', I find that I've fallen in love with KT once again, or something... I've read a fair bit of criticism about the song but I don't think the fact that it sounds like a typical KT song is necessarily a bad thing. It's their signature sound that I've come to love and I'm sure many others would agree. I hope they release more singles to inspire me to translate more. I hope you enjoy reading this one.
Q1 I’m masculine
Yes - 90%
No - 10%
Because I’m always in the pursuit of strength. Completely in physical strength and in the heart as well! That’s why my feelings are 100%... or should I say, if anything 120% but I feel that having long hair takes away 10%. Because... having short hair makes people look more masculine right?! But for the time being, I don’t have plans to cut my hair.
Q2 There are times when I’m self-centered
Yes - 60%
No - 40%
For example, when my friends come over to hang out in my room, I don’t have the self-centredness to be completely absorbed in weight training and to neglect them or anything. However if we’re playing a video game together, I get in their way by doing the “Make people get annoyed dance” or something like that. There’s about 60% weirdness in me (laughs). I’m pretty strange.
Q3 I’m surprisingly stingy
Yes - 30%
No - 70%
If I go out for a meal with friends, fundamentally, I’ll treat them. But when I go out with someone senior, I think “I’m going to be treated” so I don’t take out my wallet (laughs). When I go out for a meal with Nakamaru, in about 7 to 3 of the times we’ve divided the amount, we go dutch with scissors-paper-rock. The winning percentage? Nakamaru always wins (laughs).
Q4 I’m nice towards everyone
Yes - 50%
No - 50%
This is often said by people around me. The other day I received a call from a friend who said “There’s no last train” and I when I said “How about staying at my place?” they told me I was nice. But to me, it’s unconscious. For the members (of KAT-TUN), I’m often told by Akanishi for some reason. But I don’t have a particular kind memory (laughs).
Q5 Even I think “I’m meticulous”
Yes - 50%
No - 50%
When I’m making stew, I think about things like the type of vegetables I put in and the nutritional value. That part of me might be meticulous. But conversely there are also rough parts of me. There are times when I go to the supermarket and furiously buy without thinking so by the time I realise it, the total amount at the cashier is about 10 000 yen.
Q6 I soon lose interest in anything
Yes - 40%
No - 60%
Because I do the things I like to the end. Well, in relation to boxing, there’s no problem to the level of growing tired of it because it’s my life. Oh, I might get tired of clothes quickly. If I’m into something I’ll wear it a lot but also get tired of it quickly (laughs). I’m the type who doesn’t want to wear last year’s clothes you see.
Q7 I’m always positive
Yes - 80%
No - 20%
I think it’s quite a positive thought. Because I’m the type to grow when praised (laughs). Of course I make mistakes on TV shows and things: “Ah... if only I didn’t say that (teardrop)” or something and there are also a lot of things I regret doing but I take them as lessons learned and I’m the type that can think it’s ok as long as they let me go to the next one.
Q8 I’m serious
Yes - 70%
No - 30%
More than being serious it’s more correct to say I have a strong-willed way of speaking. If I decide to do something, I’ll definitely do it no matter how hard it is. Incidentally, the dumb things I say in magazine comments are on purpose (laughs). I’m serious for this reason, because it’s my “service talk”.@
Q9 I have an indecisive side
Yes - 20%
No - 80%
When going out for a meal there are a lot of people who ask for drinks only at first and then think about their food later but I’m the type who can order both food and drink together. I can quickly decide without being indecisive with the menu. Well, with my personality money is no object (laughs).
Q10 I’m skilled at love
I think I’m skilled up to developing love. Because I’m a person who wants to properly exchange psychological warfare-like e-mail and phone calls (laughs). But in reality when I’m dating someone, I’ll be timid all of a sudden and end up thinking: “Is it all right to send this type of message?!” or something. However, up until now I’ve never been dumped (laughs).
Translator's Corner
My thoughts on this article... wow, I'm starting to like Ueda more and more. His quirkiness he talks about in Q2 makes him all the more appealing to me. And from the articles I've read, I think he's one of the only members of KT that I could see myself being friends with because I think I'm 60% weird too so I can see where he's coming from. Also all his answers were kind of cheeky, which made him all the more interesting to read about.
Anyway, when I read some of his answers I kept thinking: "OMG! Me too!" Like Ueda I can decide straight away when ordering food even though my sister flips back and forth in the menu trying to decide what to order and I often act as if money is no object (even though I'm not rich like him) especially when it comes to my friends and family. I don't get tired of the things I like, either. And I'll wear a piece of clothing to death if I like it and then suddenly stop wearing it.
Ueda's never been dumped! (well, neither have I... but then again I don't usually pursue guys... I let them come to me. >_<)
@ Q8 Service talk - not sure what this means exactly, I just translated it from the katakana サービストーク when I couldn't find the translation anywhere. My impression is that it means what it sounds like - like Ueda is saying something to please the fans? If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Final Notes
Thanks for reading! As always, I have to say that I am in no way a fluent Japanese speaker and translating articles is a way to improve and test my own abilities. I hope you enjoyed reading these articles as much as I did. Please respect my work by not reposting this translation anywhere (including forums, other communities, etc.) if you must translate it into your own language, I would suggest reading the original Japanese text, because I can't guarantee the accuracy of my translations.
